Target Security Breach

Published February 5, 2014 by Sasser Law Firm

On December 19, 2013, Target announced that thieves had gained unauthorized access to Target payment card data. 40 million guests who had shopped and made credit or debit card purchases in US Stores between November 27th and December 15, 2013 may have been impacted. According to Target, attackers gained access to customer names, credit and debit card numbers, card expiration dates, and CVV security codes. How the thieves were able to gain access to this information is still unknown. On Tuesday, February 4, 2014, John Mulligan, Target Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, appeared before a Senate Judiciary Committee and offered an apology saying, “I want to say how deeply sorry we are for the impact this incident has had on our guests – your constituents.” He went on to say, “We know this breach has shaken their confidence in Target, and we are determined to work very hard to earn it back.”

If you shopped at Target during this period of time and made payment by using a credit or debit card, it is suggested that you keep a close eye on your accounts for any suspicious or unusual activity. If your credit or debit cards were impacted, cancel the cards immediately! If you believe that you were a victim of the Target security breach, contact the NC Department of Justice for assistance. Also, you may view Target’s answers to commonly asked questions regarding the data breach here.
